PROJECTS
Throughout the year Team INSPIRE works hard to provide fun, fulfilling, and educational projects for the special ed. students. Team INSPIRE works with several clubs from WBHS, but above all with the general student body in order to get our goals accomplished. Please feel free to read through our projects and implement these solutions at your school too!

ADAPTED BOOKS
Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief
Project INSPIRE created adapted books for the special ed. students. By creating adapted books, it allows the students to easily read the text by providing visuals above key words, bigger text, and wider spacing in comparison to normal text. In addition, our team decided to create an adapted book over A New York Times Bestseller series called Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief. By providing these students with a popular and coveted book by many students our age, Team INSPIRE felt as if they were given the opportunity to connect closer with the general student body. This would be done as the special ed. students would have a conversation opener, or way to relate with others students from the general student body. Team INSPIRE typed, printed, and presented a class set of adapted books to the special ed. department.

CHINESE NEW YEAR
Introducing Uncommon Cultures
2017 marks the Year of the Rooster! Team INSPIRE wanted to introduce an uncommon culture to the special ed. student body. Traditionally, red envelopes are given as a custom for "good luck" in the upcoming year. In each envelope, a small informative was placed. It provided a few details about Chinese New Year, a variety of translations from multiple languages, and had an uplifting quote on the back of the informative. Team INSPIRE was able to provide each student with their own red envelope and well wishings for a new year!

CANDY GRAMS
Valentines Day 2017
For Valentines Day, Team INSPIRE provided the special ed. department candy grams and decorative pencils for all of the students. We know that they enjoyed this sweet treat!

3D PRINTED ORNAMENTS
Christmas 2016
For the Christmas season, Team INSPIRE wanted to create a personalized item for each student to take home for the holidays. After much brainstorming, we decided to create 3D printed ornaments of each students face. This was done by taking a picture of each student, converting the file, and 3D printing the final image. This fun filled project provided each student a memorable take home gift that they could hang on their Christmas tree!

PEN PAL PROGRAM
Creating New Bonds
Team INSPIRE created a Pen Pal Program at West Brook High School that would allow both student bodies to communicate with one another. This project was done by allowing students from the general student body to sign up. After initial registration, Team INSPIRE assigned each student to one from the life skills class. Students were encouraged to draw pictures and express themselves with their letters. This project allowed for a more personalized and fun response between both sides! Letters were exchanged every 2 weeks till school was let out for the 2016-2017 school year. This project generated positive response from both student bodies!
TEAM INSPIRE
2017-2018
Team INSPIRE has decided to continue on with our project and to further more close the gap between the two student bodies. As the school year goes on, be sure to visit our website as we will update our projects along as we go!

CHRISTMAS TIDINGS
For the Christmas season, Team INSPIRE planned a holiday surprise for the Life Skill classes. Working with the art department and Art Club at WBHS, we were able to create fantastic posters and ornaments for the students to take home!

THE FAULT IN OUR STARS
Based on a best selling novel and award winning movie, Team INSPIRE created an adapted version of The Fault in Our Stars. In comparison to last years version, we decided to create "interactive board" after each section of the novel. In addition, we also added discussion questions for teachers to use as supplements. At our school, we reached out to the general student body to create a cover page for this book. After looking a a couple submissions, we selected a great cover made by student, Miguel Magtaan!
Down below, we have provided a copy of the novel for anyone to use, as well as a teachers edition.

SNOWMAN SOUP
For the Christmas holidays, Project INSPIRE worked together with National Honor Society and the Life Skills Department to create a teacher appreciation gift. With this project, Team INSPIRE hosted a mixer in which students could come to the class and decorate cups with Snowman faces on them, in alongside students from the Life Skills Classes. We reached out to National Honor Society for materials such as candy, candy canes, and hot chcolate. We distributed the cups to all of the faculty and staff before Christmas Break.

FRIENDSHIP BRACELETS
To encourage more everyday interactions, Team INSPIRE handed out friendship bracelets for Life Skills students, Best Buddies members, and Pen Pal participants. The purpose of these friendship bracelets is to encourage interactions in the school. These colorful bands allow students to easily recognize who their "buddy" is. This project encourages students to interact with each other.

MARDI GRAS
With the help of the WBHS French Department and club, Team INSPIRE was able to conduct a Mardi Gras celebration and informative for the Life Skills students. We created simple informative outlining the cultural holiday, and filled it with treats and beads for the students to take home and enjoy!
